mumbai: a christian religious gathering was disrupted by a group of unknown persons at a hall at dharavi on wednesday evening. three people suffered minor injuries in the incident and were taken to sion hospital for treatment. several chairs and other property was also reportedly vandalised. according to abraham mathai, member of the state minorities commission, the attack took place at the new life fellowship church, 90 feet road, dharavi where a special religious function was being held for independence day.
police commissioner m.n. singh confirmed the incident but said, ``according to preliminary reports, it is not a church but some sort of nursery or school which was being used for a religious gathering. it is not known whether whether they had the authority to offer prayers or use it for religious activities.'' mr singh also said that it was not yet known who the attackers were or the reason for the motive. ``the complainants were not sure of the identity of the attackers. there could be some previous dispute or local dispute involved,'' he said, adding that investigations were on. however, mr mathias pointed out, ``that a church is an assembly of two or more people praying. to say it is not a proper church is to quibble over the issue.''
